Pelham Bicycle Center Tip of the Day

Helmets are designed to protect your skull and brain, so use your noggin' when fitting it correctly. Always place the helmet level on your head. The front rim of the helmet should sit just above your eyebrows so that it helps protect your forehead. Adjust the straps to hold the helmet in this position when you buckle the chin strap. The chin strap is adjusted properly when it's snug enough to secure the helmet as you shake your head yet it should still be comfortable. Different brands of helmets fit differently, so try several on to compare how each feels to you. If your helmet has a visor, adjust its height so it shades your face without blocking your view of what's ahead. If you have a fall that involves hitting your head, you may need a new helmet. A helmet is designed to do its job only once. We hope you never need to find out, but don't take chances on a "crashed" helmet.

The rubber or vinyl "covers" placed on the ends of upright handlebars. Besides making it more comfortable to hold onto the bars, they cover the ends, which prevents puncture wounds should you fall and land on the bar end.
